There was a man who wanted to
travel by the desert to visit a wise old man, but he was afraid to be alone. He
told his brother that he couldn’t do it alone. So he asked many people to go
with him. They all refused, except a young man who agreed. He was brave and he
liked discovering. They agreed to go early the next morning with two donkeys
and one dromedary to carry their provision. They prepared what they needed at
night and said farewells to their families. The man had a big family, but the
young one hadn’t any. He just called his pets by this name: a dog to keep his
house, a cat to eat mice, and horse to help him in moving.
In the morning every one was there and ready to leave. First, they walked a
long distance on feet. Then they had lunch in shade of a big rock and they
followed the way until the sunset. They were so tired that they couldn’t walk.
So they stopped, pitched the tent, lit the fire near it, and waited for dinner.
They couldn’t resist sleeping. So they slept around the fire and didn’t eat
what they were waiting for. After a moment, the young man moved his foot and
touched the red fire. He got up and felt something strange in his foot. He felt
a pain which was greater than the first. He couldn’t sleep. So he waited for
sunrise. When he saw the damage in the morning, he didn’t believe his eyes. He
touched his foot and realized it wasn’t a dream or something like that; it was
real. After that, he tried to walk but he couldn’t. When his friend got up,
they went on without telling him what had happened to him, he was so patient.
He walked with difficulty then he told his friend. The man was angry because
his friend Yidir hadn’t told him at first. He put him on the donkey’s back and
they went on.
In
the middle of desert, they were thirsty and the animals couldn’t continue, so
they took the bread and left the animals. They were forced to do it and they
were sad because the animals were going to die. They went on for about 100
meters and found a spring of water in the desert. It was a miracle. Their mood
changed and they felt happy. They satisfied their thirst, went back, and gave
water to their animals.
They
followed their path and reached their destination after five days. After
looking for the old man for an hour, they finally found him in his house near
the fields. They asked him many questions and he always answered by “by
chance”.
_’’ How I’m in life’’ ?
asked Yidir
_“By chance”. Said the old man
So, he went on using “by
chance”, but he sometimes changed it to “by fault”.
_’’Why? How? ‘’ shouted Yidir
_ ‘’Your parents made a
mistake when they gave you birth’’.
The
two men were disappointed because they travelled a long distance, wasted their
energy and time, and walked under the hot sun until they got tanned. All that
to meet a stupid man who spent his life as he wanted and in the end he told
them: ’’to be born is a big fault’’. He said that because he didn’t want to
believe that he was old and that he was going to die. He liked life so much
that he didn’t want to leave it. So he preferred not being born to this life.
The men benefitted from that
experience and returned to their houses.
The two men travelled looking for knowledge in the first trip. We will see them
in the second trip in part 2.
